Short Assignment - Comic Strip Assessment

Comic Strip Assessment

You have now had the chance to not only read some comics for fun, but also to think about them with a critical eye.

For this assignment, you will be assessing three comic strips.  Two will be provided for you and you will find one on your own.

For each, you will comment on the following:

Purpose: What is the comic's purpose? Is it meant to be satirical, to describe a fantasy world, to pull you into an action story, or to make a moral point? Is the purpose clear and does it fulfill that?

Plot: Is there a clear story? Keep in mind that even a single panel has a story, though much is implied.

Characters: Are the characters interesting and engaging? Are they distinguished from one another?

Overall Quality: Is it well-drawn? Do the text and images support one another? Does the comic use any sophisticated techniques such as foreshadowing or irony?

Based on your comments regarding the four qualities above, give each comic a letter grade (A, B, C+, C, C-).

1. Pearls Before Swine

Read it here.

2. Surf Rat and Spencer

Read it here.

3. A comic of your own choosing.  Either paste the comic into this box or link to a url.

Each entry will be marked out of four according to the short assignment rubric for a total of 12 marks.
