Introduction

Welcome to Social Studies 7 Online!

Congratulations on deciding to tackle the web-based version of this course. If you haven't taken a course online before, it can be a challenge as it requires you to take more responsibility for your learning. The upside is that you have a lot of flexibility in terms of where and when you get the work done.

This course starts with the very beginnings of humans in Africa about 200 000 years ago. From here we follow our ancestors out of Africa and across the globe starting about 65 000 years ago.

The course then goes on to the cradle of civilization in the Middle East with the advent of agriculture about 10 000 years ago. You will meet the ancient Mesopotamians and Egyptians learning about their early innovations that got us to where we are today.

From there we will move in to Europe where the ancient Greeks wait for us to teach us about architecture, philosophy and democracy. Next, you will be introduced to the Romans. You will find out how they borrowed ideas from the Greeks but improved upon them, which allowed them to build colossal buildings, sculpt marble statues and develop a network of aqueducts that survive to this day.

Lastly, we will head to Central and South America to look at the civilizations that developed there around the same time. You will see how they also developed agriculture and astronomy, and how they built their own pyramids and develop expressive forms of art.

So, get your seatbelt buckled up as you have a lot of ground to cover!
