The Gold Rush Assignment

Completion requirements
Receive a grade

You have learned about three major gold rushes and how each of them contributed to the development of Canada.

The three areas you learned about each include:

  • How the discovery of gold encouraged immigration to Canada.
  • How the gold helped to shape Canada.
  • How the discovery of gold changed the lives of the First Peoples (First Nations, Métis and Inuit people).

You will have three choices for an assignment.  Complete one choice and upload in the submission area below.

Assignment Choice A - Create a Visual

Instructions:

Create a visual of the gold rushes that you learned about.  Include when each occurred, how many people came to Canada for each, where they went, and how Canada was shaped by the influx of people.

Your visual can be a poster, a timeline with drawn pictures, or you can add your information and drawings using a map of the areas where the gold rushes occurred.

Marking:

Your visual clearly indicates:

    • when and where gold rushes occurred
    • how many prospectors were drawn to each area
    • how the gold rushes shaped Canada

Assignment Choice B - My Gold Rush Experience

Put yourself in the shoes of a person that was involved in a gold rush.

You can choose to be any person, but some suggestions are:

A shopkeeper in one of the gold rush towns.

A member of a specific First Nations group (name them) affected by the gold rush.

A prospector hoping to "strike it rich".

Write a short story (include images), series of diary entries, or letters that discuss your personal experiences with any particular gold rush.   You can start your entries/story at the beginning of the journey (or beginning with the arrival of prospectors if you choose an Aboriginal person's perspective), and include details of daily life.

Marking:

Your writing clearly demonstrates:

    • Basic information - who, what, where, and when
    • The impact of the gold rush
    • The struggles and daily life of the character
    • The thoughts and emotions of the character

Assignment Choice C - The Daily News!

Choose one of the three gold rushes you have learned about.

Write a series of newspaper clippings (some events you may have to choose a logical date) that informs the citizens of Victoria what is happening at the site you chose.  You should produce at least 6 well-written articles.

Marking:

Your newspaper clippings clearly demonstrate:

    • important events of the gold rush you chose
    • Daily life
    • Impacts of the gold rush
