Mineral Resources and Mining Assignment

You have learned about several different resources that are mined, where some of these mines are located in Canada, and how each of them contributed to the development of our country.

The areas you learned about each include:

  • What mining resources are available in different areas of Canada.
  • How mining helped to encourage settlement in Canada.

You will have two choices for an assignment.  Complete one choice and upload in the submission area below.

Assignment Choice A - Create a 3D model

Instructions:

Create a 3D cross-section visual of the different types of mining.  Hint ** There is a picture in the Introduction to Mining page to help you.

You can use any medium you choose from styrofoam, molding clay, earth, or a combination of materials.  You will want your 3D model to look realistic, so spend some time making the exterior and interior as accurate as possible.

You will want to include an explanation of your model. You can provide a written explanation and images of your model, or you can create a video explaining all the components.

Marking:

Your visual clearly demonstrates:

    • the types of mining options
    • an exterior view of the landscape
    • a cross-section interior view
    • a full understanding of the types of mining

OR

Create a 3D model of a modern mine from a surface view with ½ the model showing the mine when operational and the other ½ of the model showing the area after it has been reclaimed.  Hint ** there are many images in this section of operational mine sites.  There is also an example of a reclaimed area, but you might want to do some research as well.

Again, you can use any medium you choose from styrofoam, molding clay, earth, or a combination of materials. You will want your 3D model to look realistic, so spend some time making the exterior look as accurate as possible.

You will want to include an explanation of your model.  You can provide a written explanation and images of your model, or you can create a video explaining all the components.

Marking:

Your visual clearly demonstrates:

    • the surface look of an operational mine
    • the surface look of a reclaimed mine site
    • how environmental regulations ensure that mines are reclaimed once they are closed

Assignment Choice B - Create a poster

Draw a poster of the life of a modern mine from early exploration to closure to reclamation.

Take a picture of your poster and submit it below.  Make sure that the image size is big enough to see the details. If you wish to submit a written portion explaining it, you may do so.

Marking:

Your poster clearly demonstrates:

    • the process involved prior to a mine opening
    • the process involved when a mine is closing
