Marine Resources Assignment
You have learned about Fish and Marine resources and how this industry has contributed to the development of Canada.
The areas you learned about each include:
- How fishing encouraged immigration to Canada.
- How fishing helped to shape Canada.
- How the fishing industry has changed over the years.
You will have two choices for an assignment. Complete one choice and upload in the submission area below. If you have your own idea that you would like to do for this section, please discuss it with your teacher.
Assignment Choice A - Write a Series of Newspaper Clippings
Instructions:
Write a minimum of 3 newspaper articles that follow one fishery from boom to bust (beginning to end). Choose one fish on either the east or west coast of Canada that has had seriously depleted stocks and whose fishing is either currently either severely restricted, or prohibited today.
Marking:
Your newspaper articles should include:
- An article from when and where the fishery started. Imagine the excitement of a new industry and jobs.
- The progression to depleted stocks and government regulations to help stocks recover. Oh no! The industry is in trouble! Imagine what is happening in a fishing community. How will people feel? What will government be doing?
- Final outcome and stock depletion. Imagine the stock is almost depleted. Where have the jobs gone? Will aquaculture have come to the rescue?
Assignment Choice B - Draw a Poster and Explain
Draw a poster of an aquaculture farm. Label all parts of the process clearly. Include a written explanation of your poster detailing the process as well.
Marking:
Your poster and written portion clearly indicates:
- the appropriate species for the type of fish farm you drew
- the process of aquaculture from start to finish
Take a picture of your poster. Make sure you submit a large enough file so that all the details can be seen clearly. Submit the written portion as well.
