4.2 Authorship and Bias Assignment

Completion requirements
Receive a grade

In this assignment, you will be doing some role playing.  When you role play, you assume the perspective of someone else.  This means that you pretend to have the same values, ideas, and point of view as someone else.

Consider the issue of child labour.

As you learned in a previous unit, children that work do so often because they live in poverty and are required to contribute to the family income to make ends meet.

You will write two articles in this assignment using the point of view of two different people.  In each article, write about the person's perspective about hiring children.  Include three points that the person would communicate about it.

1. Owner of the Brick Factory

How would the owner of the brick factory discuss the practice of hiring children?  How do you think this practice might be justified from his/her point of view (p.o.v.)?  What are three points that the factory owner might want to communicate with the audience?

2. Young Person Working in Brick Factory

How would the child write about the experience?  What are three points that the worker might want to share with the readers?

Each article should be about 1 paragraph long.  Be sure to include an introduction, body, and conclusion in your paragraph.

  • Introduction - Should child labour be allowed?  Briefly state three points why.
  • Body - Explain all three points in further detail.
  • Conclusion - summarize your points and reasons.

Paragraph Assessment:

Your teacher will be looking for these things in each paragraph:

  • Point of view of each character is realistic and well thought out
  • Bias is evident in both examples
  • Introduction effectively establishes a clear purpose
  • Paragraph is well-organized and flows smoothly / has main ideas developed with supporting detail
  • Conclusion sums up the information
  • Paragraph is edited and error free
