Tell me about yourself.

English language arts is all about communicating. As you will learn there are so many ways to communicate with others though reading, writing, watching, speaking, and listening. You can even communicate through art.  Communication is a life skill that is used every day, and no matter what age you are you learn new and better ways to communicate!

In order for me to best help you become a better communicator, I would like to know some more about you. Your first assignment is meant to let me have a sample of your writing and to help me get to know you a little better. You can discuss your ideas with your home facilitator, but try to do the writing independently. It will help me to help you! Read to the end of this assignment before starting. That is ALWAYS a good idea!

First, put your name, the subject, and the assignment, Tell Me About Yourself, at the top of the page (either on a computer document or on a piece of paper). Remember to always label your assignments clearly.

Then, write a paragraph based on the following topic sentence:

Here are some important and interesting things my teacher should know about me.  

You can include three or more of the following:

  • how you rate yourself as a reader (out of ten) and as a writer (out of ten)
  • what you like and/or dislike about language arts - be honest!
  • what kind of books you like to read or what the last good book you read was
  • something you hope you'll learn or do in this language arts course
  • something you think I should know about you as a person (a favourite hobby, something about your personality, something you are talented at or wish to become talented at...)

youth writingYou can do this assignment on paper or use your completer and a word processor. . If you know how to use powerpoint, you are welcome to complete this on powerpoint, even add a picture, but don't spend a long time on making it fancy as this is a short introductory assignment, not a project. However, do spend time reading over what you wrote once or twice to make edits and to proofread.

I am sure you are a pretty awesome person and I can't wait to learn more!

Assessment: Complete / Incomplete

Submission Options:

  • If completed on the computer, simply click on the submit button, find your document, and choose it.

If not completed on the computer:

  • Scan it as a single .pdf file (best idea) and then use the submit button
  • Scan it as multiple .jpg's and put them into a single WORD document; then, use the submit button
  • Drop it off with your teacher (which is also a great idea, but more difficult to return)
  • If no other way works, ask your home facilitator to take pictures. (Make them good pictures; then, embed them all into a single word document.)

If you have a new scanner and are trying to figure out the best way to scan your work for submission, here are some tips:

  • Paper Size: 8.5 x 11 inches (most typical - or can re-size later)
  • Colour Format: Grayscale (keeps file smaller than color, yet still clear)
  • File Type: PDF (best), or JPG (if PDF isn't available)
  • Resolution: 150, 200 or 300 if you have small details
