Assignment: What's in the Can?

Completion requirements
Receive a grade

For this assignment, you will be looking at a selection of beverages. You do not need to drink them; you just need the information on the side of the containers. You can go to a supermarket and/or go through your recycling container.

In your collection of drink containers include each of the following:

  1. all-natural fruit juice
  2. fruit punch/fruit drink with added sugar
  3. pop
  4. sports drink
  5. sweetened iced tea
  6. water

Using the front of the label only, rank them from least amount of sugar to the most. Be sure to consider the amount in the can compared to the grams of sugar.

Record which drink has the most sugar and set it aside.

Fill out the attached worksheet below with the information for each drink and answer the questions at the bottom. You need to identify the sugars in each drink, and sometimes companies use aliases for sugar. On the last page, there is a list of some of the different names for sugar. You can also access it here by clicking on Sugar Aliases.
