Self-Regulation/Self-Management

Self-regulation and self-management refers to the ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts and behaviors effectively in different situations.  This includes managing stress, controlling impulses, motivating oneself, and setting and working toward achieving personal and academic goals.

Examples of questions that someone with good self-management may ask include:

  • What different responses can I have to an event or situation?
  • How can I effectively respond to an event or situation as constructively as possible?

  • follows instructions
  • accepts criticism
  • accepts "No" for an answer
  • asks for help
  • asks for permission
  • stays on task and ignores distraction
  • makes good choices
  • solves problems
