The Komagata Maru Assignment
In this section you have learned about the immigration attempt by 321 East Indian passengers aboard the Komagata Maru.
The areas you learned about each include:
- Why the passengers traveled to Canada.
- What happened to them when they arrived.
- How long they stayed in port.
- What happened to the men when they arrived home.
- How the government has tried to make amends for past wrongs.
You will have two choices for an assignment. Complete one choice and upload in the submission area below.
Assignment Choice A - Sitting in Port or Arrival Back Home
For this choice, you will represent the Komagata Maru in port OR the reception of the passengers once they arrived back home in India.
You can complete a drawing, a 3D model, or a diarama.
Your representation should be as detailed as possible and will try to portray the realities of almost three months aboard the ship in port, or the brutal reception when they arrived back home.

- A reflective understanding of the situation facing the East Indian passengers.
- Care and attention to details.
Assignment Choice B - Letters or Diary entries
Write at least four letters/diary entries of one of the passengers aboard the Komagata Maru.
The writing pieces should be a personal and emotional account of each stage of the journey.
- How would the passenger feel as they started out on the journey to Canada?
- The reception once the ship arrived at port?
- After sitting in port for 2 months without a successful outcome?
- The journey home with the knowledge that the reception would be hostile?
Marking:
Your submission includes:
- At least four well-written reflective letters/diary entries.
- The emotions are clearly demonstrated and empathy for the passenger is apparent.
- Care and attention to details (editing) is apparent.
