3.2 Poverty Assignment
You have learned what poverty is and what some organizations are doing to try to eliminate it. Poverty is a global issue and occurs everywhere, even in your own community.
Time For a Change - Community Study of Poverty
What things are being done in your community to reduce or eliminate poverty? The following activity will give you an opportunity to find out ways that your community is trying to reduce poverty.
Step 1 - Find people and organizations in your community that are working to reduce poverty. Research the community services that are available in your area. Helpful resources include using the Internet, telephone book, asking your home facilitator, or contacting your local government.
Step 2 - Pick one of the groups that you listed above. Create five (5) questions that you can ask them about what they are doing about poverty. Make sure that you have ten good questions before you complete your interview. Good questions require more than a simple “yes” or “no” answer. They require more detailed and thoughtful responses.
Step 3 - Interview the Organization
Use the questions you made from step 2 to conduct your interview with someone from the organization. You may use a smart phone or another recording device to record personal interviews - be sure to ask the person for permission to record the conversation. If you do the interview through the Internet using e-mail, or by telephone, make sure you get permission from your home facilitator BEFORE you contact the person or group. Perhaps you can use your home facilitator's email rather than your own.
Make sure you keep good notes of the interview because you will be using the notes in the presentation.
Step 4 - Reflection -
Think about the following questions and write a reflection for the conclusion of your presentation.
- What are your thoughts on the organization you researched? Discuss effectiveness, areas of difficulties, and what can be done to help them reach people living in poverty.
- What do you think people can do to reduce poverty in their own community, province/territory, country, and in the world?
Step 5 - Presentation
Presentation:
Present your findings in a hand-written document, a word processing document, a slide show document, or even a poster.
In your presentation, include:
- Five questions and answers - Question should be open-ended (not yes or no) questions. If you visit the organization, take a photograph or two of the facilities and of you doing your interview.
- Reflections - Thoughtful responses to the prompts given in step four.
- Check over your work for good spelling, grammar, and punctuation in your work.
