3.4 Climate Change Assignment

Completion requirements
Receive a grade

You have learned that global warming is an international issue. You have also discovered that the efforts to combat climate change will require international cooperation.  The most important thing that you may have learned in this section is that you can make a difference as well.

In this assignment, you will have two choices.  Complete one choice and upload in the submission area below.  If you have your own idea that you would like to do for this section, please discuss it with your teacher.

Assignment Choice A - Changing Your Habits to Fight Climate Change

You have read several suggestion from the graphic created by the UN to help individuals do their part to combat climate change.  This assignment gives you the opportunity to reflect on areas where you and members of your household can make changes and contribute to the effort to reduce CO2 emissions.

Take a look at the suggestions the UN made and discuss each of them in terms of your family's current habits in the area, how you might be able to improve, who will help you reach these goals, and when/how you plan to implement your goals.

You can create a variety of end products to document your investigation and goal setting including a slide show, a video, a story, a report, or whatever you think of to demonstrate this assignment.

Important details to include:

  • Make sure that you include each of the 10 suggestions made by the UN.
  • Discuss your and your household's current habits in each area
  • Discuss changes that you can make in each area
  • Include information about when and how each change will be implemented

Assignment Choice B - Research British Columbia's Emission Reduction Targets and Strategies

Canada has made a commitment to do our part to reduce emissions.  Even if we all pitch in to do our part, there are many areas that individuals just don't have control over.

Next to individual contributions, each province has a big role to help Canada reach its targets.

In this assignment choice, you need to:

1. Find out what the government of BC has committed to do to reduce our province's emissions.

2. How will they achieve our provincial reduction goals? What are the plans? What is the timeline for the changes?

3. Once you have researched the initiatives by our province, discuss if you think the efforts are sufficient.  If not, what more can be done?  If so, what strategies do you think will be most effective?

4. Are you confident that BC will reach its targets?  Why or why not?

Again, you can choose from a variety of end products to document your investigation,  including a slide show, a video, a report, or whatever you think of to demonstrate this assignment.

Important details to include:

  • What BC plans to do to reduce emissions
  • How the government plans to implement these goals
  • Whether or not you think the strategies will be effective with explanation
  • What more you think the province can do
