Section 3.4 Assignment - Idealization

Receive a grade

For this assignment, you will need a photograph that you have taken of a person you know, a building or a place where you like to spend time. It doesn't have to be a pretty photo and it can be taken using a camera, phone, laptop or any other media device.

Your task here is to create an idealized version of the subject of your photo. You have some options here.

  • Draw the subject from the photo
  • Use an image editing program such as Photoshop, iphoto or GIMP
  • Use an online program such as Pixlr or app
  • Use another idea that you have but check with your teacher

You will get credit for the amount of effort that you put in though this assignment is not marking you on your drawing abilities or technical skills. Instead you need to show that you understand how an imperfect subject can be changed to make it look more perfect.

You will need to include your original photo which you took. It cannot come from the web. Your teacher may check the exif info to make sure.

You will also include your idealized version of the photo.

Lastly, you will write an artist's statement in which you explain the subject and why you chose it as well as the method that you used to idealize it.  Then you will explain how the idealized version differs to the realistic one. 

This will be marked according to the rubric below.
