Section 1.2 Assignment - Out of Eden
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and National Geographic Fellow Paul Salopek is retracing on foot our ancestors’ migration out of Africa and across the globe. His 21 000-mile (33 000 km) odyssey began in Ethiopia and will end seven years later at the tip of South America.
Read about his journey on the National Geographic website by clicking the link below.
Step 1
Once you have read about the journey, open a word-processing document which you will entitle "Out of Eden." Answer the following in a few sentences each.
1. What is this journey about?
2. Do you think that it is a worthwhile investigation? Why or why not? Back up your response with facts from the website that you read.
Step 2
Once you have completed that, take a look at the companion website Out of Eden by clicking the link below.
Browse the part of the site called "dispatches." Choose one that interests you. It might be a recent one or one from much earlier in his journey.
In your response you may ask questions, observe facts, make connections or note what you find interesting. This response should be at least half a page and no more than one page. You may quote from the dispatch and may include images from it in your response. This is not meant to be formatted as a formal paragraph but should show exploration of the ideas being investigated here.
Submit both parts of your response below as one file.
This will be marked out of 20 according to the rubric below.
