Developing Effective Communication Skills
With massive online social media usage changing how the world communicates, it’s no wonder some struggle to properly communicate their thoughts and feelings and tailor them to the right audience. To be an effective communicator, actively try some of the points below, as well listen to the Ted Talk video. Communication, like any other skill, must be practiced, reinforced and learned about.
Communication skills include:
- active listening "We may believe that we are good listeners, but listening is more than waiting or your turn to interrupt."
- eye contact rather than looking elsewhere
- speaking clearly and concisely
- asking questions
- paraphrasing - example - "So you are saying that...."
- appropriate posture & body language.
- empathy and respect
