Lab: Experimenting With Chocolate Chip Cookies
For this lab, you will make one batch of the original recipe and another batch with at least one alteration/substitution of your choice (If you want less cookies, you can halve the recipe; you can find tips on how to do this back in the unit reading). If you want to try more alterations/substitutions, you can, just make sure to list what the changes were. An example of an alteration would be putting melted butter in the recipe instead of room-temperature butter. A substitution would be using vegetable oil or bacon fat instead of butter. You will do a comparison and evaluation of your original and altered cookie.
Please download this document and fill it in as you do your lab. This lab sheet has a prediction chart and more space for you to discuss your experimentation with your cookie recipe.
LAB INFORMATION
1. Fill in the lab sheet with your substitution or altered ingredient information and reflections in the prediction table. Then submit your base recipe. You can use a family recipe, one you found on the internet, or use the recipe in the video above. Then you will be gathering everything you need to make chocolate chip cookies. If you have made chocolate chip cookies before and want to get creative with some additions, either from the video below or on your own, just add the ingredients and steps to your lab ingredients list.
PHOTOS
2. For this lab, you need to take a minimum of 10 pictures of you preparing this product.
- You must be clearly visible, including your face, in at least 4 of the pictures. You can take selfies or have a friend or family member take photos of you in action.
- You must clearly show the steps you have taken to make the product. Take photos of yourself measuring the ingredients, sifting, cutting in, folding, rolling, etc.
- You must have photos of your two final products. Take an image of each as they came out of the oven. Then have a final presentation image where you plate each product so that they are ready to serve. An example would be showing the pan with all the cookies fresh from the oven. Then find a decorative plate or tray to artfully display a few cookies. You can even add a nice napkin and something to drink with it. Make sure to have good close-up images of your two cookies.
EVALUATION
3. You must fill out an evaluation of your product. This includes an evaluation done by yourself and an adult. Be sure to use descriptive words and discuss the process, the product, expectations, previous experience and anything else you observed while making this product. Use your five senses in your descriptions. Be detailed and creative with your word choice. Ask the adult who is tasting your food to do the same in their evaluation. You will also need to evaluate and discuss your two different cookies and which you liked best.
